Walking the Line: Managed Pressure Drilling School

Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) is an adaptive drilling process that is rapidly gaining popularity in the oil and gas drilling industry as a way to mitigate the risks and costs associated with drilling wells within narrow, downhole environmental limits.

Signa Engineering's "Walking the Line: Managed Pressure Drilling School" is a comprehensive class that instructs students on the entire MPD process. Actual case histories are presented throughout the course so students can project classroom instruction to specific MPD operations.

The various methods of successful MPD are covered, including combinations of backpressure, variable fluid density, fluid rheology, circulating friction, hole geometry and drillstring diameter.

MPD has the potential to eliminate one or more casing strings from the drilling operation, which can lead to substantial cost and time savings. Other benefits of MPD include Real-Time Well Control, Reduction of Lost Circulation and Ballooning, Reduction in the Risk of Stuck Pipe, Higher Rate of Penetration, Ability to Drill longer Extended Reach Wells with Constant BHP, and a Safer Drilling Environment.

Wellsite Operations

This 4-1/2 day course is presented by means of lecture, and case problems. Ample time is allocated for questions and answers. Students are required to provide an engineering calculator. Lecture and examples are integrated into the course presentation to provide specific examples of real world problems and to provoke discussion on major issues.

The course can be used as a refresher for experienced drilling foremen, for those who have been managing projects but lack formal training, for training new project managers and for training project support personnel and anyone interested in basic wellsite supervision.
